Direct Primary Care

What Is Direct Primary Care? A Guide for Families

Clinician listening to a patient during a primary care consultation

Healthcare shouldn’t have to feel complicated.

For many families, getting primary care can mean waiting for an appointment, spending a short amount of time with a provider, navigating insurance requirements, and sometimes receiving a bill later that they weren’t expecting.

Direct Primary Care, commonly called DPC, takes a different approach.

At EZ Health & Wellness, our goal is to make healthcare more personal, accessible, and straightforward for individuals and families in the San Antonio area.

If you’ve never heard of Direct Primary Care before, here’s how it works.

What Is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care is a membership-based approach to primary care.

Instead of billing an insurance company for each covered primary care service, a DPC practice establishes a direct relationship with its patients. Members typically pay a predictable monthly fee in exchange for access to a defined range of primary care services.

The easiest way to think about DPC is this: instead of insurance standing between you and your primary care provider, you establish a direct healthcare relationship with the practice.

How Does Direct Primary Care Work?

Think about many of the services you routinely need from primary care:

  • Preventive and wellness visits
  • Sick visits
  • Management of chronic conditions
  • Medication management
  • Follow-up appointments
  • Health and lifestyle counseling
  • Coordination of care when a specialist is needed

With a traditional fee-for-service model, each visit or service may generate a separate charge that is processed through insurance. With Direct Primary Care, many primary care services are included as part of your membership according to the terms of your membership agreement.

That predictable structure allows the practice to focus more on taking care of patients rather than billing insurance for every interaction.

Is Direct Primary Care Health Insurance?

No. This is one of the most important things to understand about DPC.

Direct Primary Care is not health insurance, and a DPC membership should not be viewed as a replacement for insurance coverage. Your DPC membership is designed for primary care.

Health insurance may still be important for expenses outside the scope of your DPC membership, such as:

  • Emergency room visits
  • Hospitalizations
  • Surgery
  • Specialist care
  • Advanced imaging
  • Certain medications
  • Other major or unexpected medical expenses

Many DPC patients maintain health insurance while using their DPC membership for everyday primary care needs.

A simple way to think about it: DPC helps you access primary care. Insurance helps protect you from larger healthcare expenses.

Why Do Patients Choose Direct Primary Care?

1. A More Personal Relationship With Your Provider

Good primary care isn’t just about treating you when you’re sick. It means having a healthcare provider who understands your medical history, medications, risk factors, goals, and concerns over time. Direct Primary Care is designed around that ongoing patient-provider relationship.

2. Easier Access to Primary Care

Sometimes you don’t need an emergency room. You just need to talk to someone who knows your health history. Depending on your membership and the services available through your DPC practice, care may include office visits, telehealth, secure communication, and follow-up care.

3. More Time to Talk About Your Health

Healthcare works better when there is time to ask questions. Why is my blood pressure increasing? What does my A1c mean? Why am I gaining weight? Should I be worried about my cholesterol? Could a medication be causing this symptom? DPC is intended to keep the patient-provider relationship at the center of primary care.

4. Predictable Primary Care Costs

A DPC membership provides a predictable recurring cost for the primary care services included in your membership agreement. This can make routine primary care expenses easier to understand and plan for.

5. A Focus on Prevention, Not Just Sick Visits

One of the biggest advantages of an ongoing primary care relationship is the opportunity to identify problems earlier and monitor health over time.

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Blood sugar and A1c
  • Weight and metabolic health
  • Medication effectiveness
  • Recommended screenings
  • Lifestyle risk factors
  • Changes in your health over time

The goal isn’t simply to help you when you’re sick. It’s to help you stay healthier in the first place.

What About Lab Work?

Laboratory testing is an important part of primary care, but exactly what is included in a DPC membership varies from practice to practice.

At EZ Health & Wellness, we believe patients should understand why a test is being ordered and what their results mean. Rather than simply telling you that a number is “high” or “low,” we want to help you understand how your results fit into the bigger picture of your health.

Depending on the situation, laboratory testing may help evaluate cholesterol, diabetes risk, kidney and liver function, thyroid health, anemia, vitamin deficiencies, hormones, and other medical concerns. Applicable laboratory fees and whether testing is included or offered separately should be discussed before testing whenever possible.

Who Can Benefit From Direct Primary Care?

  • Busy professionals who want convenient access to primary care.
  • Parents and families who want an established healthcare relationship instead of starting over every time someone gets sick.
  • Patients with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, prediabetes, or obesity who benefit from regular follow-up.
  • People focused on prevention who want to understand their labs, risk factors, nutrition, weight, and long-term health.
  • People with high-deductible insurance plans who may otherwise face significant out-of-pocket costs for routine care before meeting their deductible.

Sometimes, DPC is simply a good fit for someone who wants healthcare to feel more personal.

Direct Primary Care vs. Concierge Medicine

DPC and concierge medicine are sometimes confused, but they aren’t necessarily the same thing. Both models may emphasize access and a stronger relationship with a healthcare provider. However, DPC generally uses a recurring membership to cover a defined range of primary care services and typically does not bill insurance for services covered by that membership. Concierge practices may charge a membership fee while also billing insurance for medical services.

Why EZ Health & Wellness Chose Direct Primary Care

We believe primary care should feel like a relationship-not a transaction.

At EZ Health & Wellness, we want our patients to feel comfortable asking questions, discussing their goals, and reaching out when something doesn’t feel right.

  • Explaining your labs.
  • Talking through your treatment options.
  • Discussing lifestyle changes that are actually realistic.
  • Following up instead of simply saying, “We’ll check it again next year.”
  • Helping you understand the why behind your healthcare.

Direct Primary Care gives us the opportunity to build that type of practice.
